Internships – sound very American – even cause a giggle to be stifled, as we think of that most famous of all interns in the White House in the mid-nineties.
Lots of innovative business ideas come from the US – as well as lots of simple ones, and they don’t come much simpler than this: having educated, enthusiastic people work willingly at low or no cost is beneficial for your organisation.
An increasing number of Irish business, political and non-governmental organisations are coming to understand what law and accountancy firms have known for years: with a little lateral thinking and organisation, interns can make immense contribution to an organisation in myriad ways.
We have been managing internship programmes for international students since 1989. Ours are structured programmes, from which the interns generally gain academic or vocational credits; many are run in conjunction with EU skills development programmes such as the Leonardo da Vinci initiative. We organise accommodation for interns near their workplace, with ongoing support provided to the intern and the host organisation.
Organisations hosting interns on our programmes point to benefits such as more up-to-date knowledge and creative problem solving, as well as a fresh perspective and simply “another pair of hands” provided by the interns.
